What does that mean?

The days of using energy-intensive HPS sodium lamps in horticulture are slowly becoming a thing of the past, as lighting systems are being upgraded on a large scale to LED technology.

LED lighting technology for horticulture not only provides measurable savings in electricity consumption. Above all, it offers access to previously unattainable parameters, enabling the selection of the optimal light spectrum for the type of crop and plants, while maintaining these parameters throughout the entire lifespan of the fixture. Unique control capabilities mean that these parameters can also be adjusted depending on the growth stage.

CASE STUDY

Smart lighting for plant cultivation with a customized LED spectrum

Client: An innovative vertical farm specializing in the year-round cultivation of herbs and lettuce in controlled environments

Services provided:
Solutions used:
Problem:

An LED lighting system that ensures high photosynthetic efficiency and optimizes the growth cycle, enables programmable control of the light spectrum during various stages of plant development, and integrates with the existing automation and climate control system.

Solution:

We designed a system consisting of a control unit and LED light sources equipped with diodes emitting precisely selected wavelengths. The controller supports PWM and our proprietary control algorithm, which enables dynamic management of lighting channels.

Main description:

We analyzed the biological needs of plants, placing them at the center of the project when selecting the LED spectrum. We took into account the wavelengths that specifically support: the simulation of photosynthesis and vegetative growth, intensive photosynthesis and flowering stimulation, as well as their impact on stem elongation and the regulation of the day-night cycle (the Emerson effect). The light source is complemented by 4000K white light with a very high color rendering index to ensure the fullest possible spectrum, with the aim of controlling morphology and improving the quality of the perceived environment for operators.

Customer benefits:
  • Faster growth and higher yield:

– Comparative tests showed a 12–15% reduction in the growth cycle of basil and arugula compared to the previous system using classic white LED light

– Increased biomass thanks to PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) optimization.

  • Precise control of growth stages

– The ability to adjust the light spectrum to a specific plant stage improved crop quality—more compact leaves, deeper color, better taste.

  • Energy savings

– By eliminating unnecessary wavelengths and optimizing power, energy consumption was reduced by 18% while maintaining the same biological effect.

  • Scalability and automation

– The controller with a digital protocol enabled integration with the climate and irrigation control platform—a single interface for the entire growing environment.

Interesting fact:

Thanks to the implementation of far-red light, it is possible to control plant responses to day length and, consequently, to control the timing of flowering without interfering with temperature or CO₂ levels, which is important in multi-stage or experimental crops.
