What does it mean?

In response to growing awareness of the possibilities offered by LED technology, there is an increasing demand for lighting fixtures that enable dynamic control of white light. One solution that meets this need is Dynamic White technology, in which the light source is equipped with LEDs of at least two different shades of white light, sometimes supported by additional LEDs, such as amber LEDs, to increase functionality and improve quality parameters. The challenge for the design team is to create a control algorithm that will ensure a stable luminous flux generated by the luminaire across the entire dimming range. In other words, the goal is to ensure constant brightness regardless of the selected light color. This task is not easy and is often simplified by treating the total luminous flux generated by LEDs of different color temperatures as equivalent, which is not always correct.

Problem:

The challenge set by the investor was to create a functional LED module that would not only enable winning tenders in a highly competitive market, but also give public spaces a new look thanks to an unprecedented combination of colors and dynamic control. Another important goal was to simplify the installation process for installers and reduce the time needed for programming and configuring the luminaires to a minimum. An additional difficulty was the specific mechanics of the luminaire, which used stainless steel, complicating heat management in the luminaire.

Solution:

Development of advanced thermal protection that protects the light source from overheating, design of an individual LED module in dynamic white technology, based on two extreme light colors and an amber diode, development of an RS485-based control protocol that allows luminaires to be connected in any topology, use of the RDM protocol for luminaire programming

Main description:

The LED module design required the use of an aluminum substrate and the placement of a large number of components on a small board area. The dimensions of the module were dictated by the specific shape of the luminaire and the need to use a central hole in which a water nozzle would be mounted. There were also requirements regarding the power generated by the diodes and the angle of illumination, which dictated the number and type of diodes, as well as the type of optics used. To achieve the goal in terms of the color system, we opted for a mix of diodes with two extreme shades of white light enhanced with amber color. This combination makes it possible to achieve unprecedented effects in a very wide range of CCT color temperatures. For communication, we used a custom-developed protocol based on RS485 transmission with built-in terminators, allowing the luminaires to be connected in any topology, bypassing the rules dictated by the DMX protocol. In addition, through the RDM protocol, we enabled remote identification, configuration, and programming of the luminaires, which was a game changer for inst
